Identifying the economic determinants of individual voting behaviour in UK general elections

Abstract We explore the economic determinants of individual voting behaviour in five UK electoral cycles during 1992–2014. Using Understanding Society and British Household Panel Surveys, we investigate importance political sentiments subjective evaluations disentangling persistence party support unobserved heterogeneity effects. estimate joint dynamic tripartite models egocentric perceptions current prospective finances, permitting longitudinal simultaneous determination personal finances preferences. The results validate hypothesis adjacent to downturns: for governing is positively related own financial well-being. Failing account simultaneity not accounting dynamics initial inflate impact evaluations.
